As an elementary art teacher, writing emergency substitute lesson plans can quickly become a daunting task due to the number of grade levels and ages we teach. Our collection of lessons must be engaging but manageable and organized so that even a substitute with minimal art background can confidently use it. At my school, we are asked to submit emergency substitute lesson plans and I am sharing mine in case any other teachers are in a similar situation.
The lessons are stored on Google slides. By publishing my plans to the web, I can create a custom link using tinyurl.com. The substitute then types in the link in my Smartboard’s web browser to pull up the slides. All the lessons require blank paper and coloring tools such as crayons, colored pencils and markers. The basket below is what I use for each pair of students. It provides students with options yet limits any mess (and worry) that would come with having out more expensive art supplies.
My actual sub lessons are little bit more involved. These are meant for emergency absences. All of the videos used in the emergency sub lessons are found on YouTube. I do not own the rights to any of the videos and this is a free resource. Please be sure to follow and show some love to these amazing creators that so graciously share their creative work on the internet with all of us!
The emergency sub lessons can be customized to fit your needs and schedule. I teach K-3 art classes at one campus and a 4/5 digital media class at another, so mine our tailored to my schedule. Feel free to add, modify and adjust the plans to make them work for you and your students! Also, reduce the number of slides by printing out the information for the sub and placing it in a sub folder.
